Reading for Fun

Yesterday at Village Prep we were able to try a different reading exercise with the scholars. Every week the scholars are given a book to take home and practice with. Then, on Thursday they are tested on their book to see if they practiced. If they read the whole book with little to know errors they are rewarded with a sticker! And after they receive three stickers they get to pick a prize out of the “treasure chest”. This includes small toy cars, cowboy hats, posters and even multi-colored pens. This reward system really pushes the children to practice at home. In fact, almost all of them pass every week. The students that don’t get very upset, but then they almost always go home and make sure they practice more. It was so fun to do this with the students because they are so enthusiastic.

Today in the morning we finished up the DRA testing for the year. So next week we should have completely different tasks. We also had to make name tags for all of the students for their trip to the zoo next week. I am excited to go to the zoo and just spend time with the children. It will also be interesting to see what field trips are like for Village Prep.
