Blogging Requirements

Basic requirements will be the following:

* Three posts per week minimum about your own project.

* Posts must be done by Sunday each week.

* One contribution/comment about one of your classmate's posts that offers additional insight to their experiences.

* Your post about your own project is to be a minimum of 200 words.

* Your comment about another experience should be positive and encouraging.

* Photos and/or videos are not required, but definitely encouraged. It's nice to have a visual to help the image in our head as we read about your project.

2100 Lakeside: 2 Types of People

One thing that I have observed over my past two weeks being at the shelter, is that there at two types of people. On one hand, there are some of these guys that will do anything it takes to get a better life. They come in and practice interview skills for hours at a time for a job that most of us wouldn't look twice at, and will read over their resumes dozens of times to ensure that it is exactly how they want it. These guys have good hearts, they understand they may have messed up or they may be down on their luck, but they really appreciate any and every opportunity that they get. But the unfortunate thing is that just the opposite, there are some men here who are content with their situation and its hard to watch. A lot of these guys are completely okay with coming in every night, having a bed to sleep on, and then going and screwing around on facebook the whole next day. Its extremely frustrating to watch someone take one of the few computers, just to mess around, from someone who really could use that time to work on something of value to them. It is only my second week, so I am not comfortable saying something at this point, but I have started really focusing my attention on the people that really need my help as opposed to those who are taking advantage of the system.

    That is pretty disheartening. But at the very least, it's important that people know that there IS that group of people who are really making an effort to get back up on their feet... A huge misconception about poverty is that it is always caused by laziness, which is often not the case. So it's great that there are people there who appreciate every opportunity they get and work hard to improve their lives, even if some of the others' antics can be frustrating.
