2100 Lakeside: Hawken 8th Graders

So this past week, a group of Hawken 8th graders were here to do a small service project. They started by painting a wall in one of the communities (where the guys sleep is called a community), then would do small activities in the afternoon such as reading some of the poems that guys wrote, or making posters of someone's life from the beginning until they made it to the shelter. They were all real nice kids and were excited to help out in any way they could, which was nice to see, especially at younger age like that. At one point I had the opportunity to talk with the group about what I was doing and how this experience has impacted me as a person. We discussed the different kinds of men here, and then talked a little bit about what it means to be homeless and then told them some stories about personal encounters I had with some of the people here. The 8th graders also beat out all the other advisories for a grant of $800, that was given to 2100. It was really nice to see these kids get involved, even for just a couple days, I hope they got something out of the experience, because it was probably nothing like most kids have experienced before.
